Wood Studio Pro

From Your Workshop to a Professional Studio, Instantly.

We pour our time, passion, and skill into every piece we create at the lathe. We chase the perfect curve, a flawless finish, and the story hidden in the grain. But then comes the hard part: taking a photo that does it justice. Messy backgrounds, poor lighting, and awkward shadows can make a masterpiece look mediocre.

That’s why I built Wood Studio Pro. It's a simple, free tool I created to help fellow woodturners and craftspeople create stunning, gallery-quality photos of their work—no camera, lights, or photo experience needed.

How It Works

Wood Studio Pro uses smart technology to lift your piece out of its original photo and place it into a perfect, hyper-realistic virtual studio. The process is incredibly simple:

  1. Choose a Mood: Select a style from the dropdown menu. Do you want a clean, minimalist look for your online store, or a dramatic, moody shot for your portfolio?
  2. Upload Your Photo: Snap a picture of your piece with your phone (or use an existing photo). Don't worry about the background.
  3. Download Your Studio Shot: In seconds, the tool will generate a professional "After" image, ready to download and share.

Create the Perfect Scene for Your Work

The tool never alters your actual piece—it only changes the world around it. It preserves the color, texture, and fine details you worked so hard to create. You can choose from a dozen different "moods," including:

  • Authentic Studio: A clean, neutral grey background with soft, diffuse light that reveals the natural texture and "evidence of the hand" in your work.
  • Workbench: Place your piece on a rustic, weathered wooden surface with a softly blurred workshop in the background for an authentic, "maker's space" feel.
  • Dramatic Studio: Create a high-impact image with a single, strong key light, deep shadows, and a dark background to emphasize the form.
  • Neutral White Space: A minimalist, high-key setting with ample negative space, perfect for modern aesthetics and e-commerce sites.
  • And many more... from dark and backlit to warm and earthy.

This is a tool by a woodturner, for woodturners. My hope is that it helps you spend less time fussing with photography and more time doing what you love: turning wood.

Symmetry Studio

Great at the Lathe, Terrible at the Sketchbook? I Get It.

Have you ever had a perfect idea for a form—a graceful curve for a vase or a bold line for a bowl—but when you try to sketch it, it comes out wobbly, lopsided, and nothing like the masterpiece in your head?

Drawing a perfectly symmetrical shape is hard. Translating that 2D sketch into a 3D object is even harder. That’s why I built Symmetry Design Studio, a free and simple web tool designed to bridge the gap between the idea in your mind and a workable plan for the lathe.

It’s not a complicated CAD program; it’s a digital sketchbook for turners.

How It Works: From a Simple Line to a 3D Form

The process is designed to feel intuitive, even if you think you can't draw a straight line.

  1. You Only Draw Half. The screen is split by a center line that acts like the core of your spindle. You simply draw the profile of your piece on one side, and the app perfectly mirrors it on the other in real-time. No more guessing, no more erasing.
  2. Instantly See It in 3D. With the click of a button, the app takes your 2D profile and "lathes" it into a 3D model. You can spin it around, look at it from every angle, and see exactly how those curves will interact. You can finally check if the proportions feel right before you ever touch a tool to wood.
  3. Refine and Perfect. Made a mistake? There's an undo button. Want to visualize a hollow form? Switch to the "Interior" line tool to draw the inside wall, and the 3D model will update to show you the wall thickness.

Key Features for the Workshop

  • Perfect Symmetry, Guaranteed: The real-time mirroring means your designs are perfectly balanced from the start.
  • Instant 3D Visualization: Stop guessing what your profile will look like. See your vessel, box, or spindle in 3D and rotate it 360 degrees.
  • Simple Drawing Tools: Whether you prefer straight lines, gentle curves, or freehand drawing, the tools are straightforward and easy to master.
  • Plan Your Hollowing: Use the "Interior" line tool to design the inside of your vessel and instantly visualize the wall thickness in the 3D view.
  • Save & Export Your Designs: Save your favorite profiles to work on later, or export a clean 2D drawing as a PNG that you can print and take to the workshop.

This is a tool I built for my own workflow to help get ideas out of my head and into a tangible plan. I hope it helps you bring your next great idea to life.
